The event was organized by the <strong>Digital Assets Association Austria (DAAA)<\/strong> and focused on the practical next stage of digital-asset regulation in Europe.<\/p>\n<p>The official program centered on <strong>\u201cMiCAR full circle: Beyond CASP licensing and general compliance.\u201d<\/strong> The agenda covered MiCAR in practice, supervisory developments, asset-referenced tokens, tax and compliance, and the road ahead for regulated digital assets in Europe.<\/p>\n<p>This part of the event was important because MiCAR is no longer only a legal or theoretical discussion. It is becoming an operational framework for crypto-asset service providers, exchanges, legal advisors, financial institutions, and digital-asset companies active in the European market.<\/p>\n<p>The event also created a valuable professional environment for networking. During the networking part of the evening, I had the opportunity to speak with several experienced leaders and decision-makers in Austria\u2019s digital-asset ecosystem. I especially enjoyed conversations with <strong>Walter M\u00f6senbacher<\/strong>, <strong>Mazurka Zeng<\/strong>, Managing Director of Bybit EU, <strong>Marduet Van<\/strong>, and <strong>Gayane Mkrtchyan<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>These discussions were separate from the official event program, but they were personally meaningful for me because I was asked about my recent research on blockchain, energy systems, sustainability, and AI-based energy-market analysis.<\/p>\n<h2>Explaining My Research on Blockchain-Secured Energy Data<\/h2>\n<p>During the networking discussions, I explained my recently published work on a <a href=\"https:\/\/javadfarahani.com\/de\/academic\/a-sustainability-assessment-of-a-blockchain-secured-solar-energy-logger-for-edge-iot-environments\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>blockchain-secured solar energy logging system<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In this research, I developed a physical solar energy system that collects energy data from an edge IoT environment. The system does not simply record the data in a conventional database. Instead, the energy records are cryptographically connected through hashes, grouped into a Merkle tree, and then anchored to a smart contract.<\/p>\n<p>The main purpose of this design is to make energy data more tamper-resistant, traceable, and verifiable.<\/p>\n<p>This matters because energy data is increasingly used for sustainability claims, certification, auditing, carbon accounting, local energy markets, and renewable-energy reporting. If such data can be changed after collection, then the trustworthiness of the entire system becomes questionable.<\/p>\n<p>A blockchain-secured logging architecture can help address this problem by creating a verifiable record of energy data without requiring every individual sensor reading to be stored directly on-chain. In my paper, this was implemented through a Merkle-tree batching approach, where local records remain efficient while the blockchain anchor provides an external layer of verification.<\/p>\n<p>This research is directly connected to my broader interest in how blockchain can move beyond financial speculation and become part of reliable digital infrastructure.<\/p>\n<h2>From Energy Verification to Flexible Demand<\/h2>\n<p>The second topic I discussed was my ongoing work on <strong>negative electricity prices and flexible energy demand in Austria<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In my recent analysis of Austrian electricity-market data, negative-price periods appeared in roughly 6\u20137% of the observed yearly intervals. These periods are important because they often indicate a mismatch between electricity supply and demand. In some cases, renewable generation is high, demand is low, or the system does not have enough flexibility to absorb available electricity efficiently.<\/p>\n<p>However, negative prices alone do not automatically mean that new demand should be added to the grid.<\/p>\n<p>The more precise research question is:<\/p>\n<p><strong>When is it useful, clean, and safe to activate additional flexible demand?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is the foundation of my current model. I am working on categorizing electricity-market intervals based on several criteria, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p>whether the electricity price is negative;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>whether renewable generation is high;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>whether surplus electricity is likely available;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>whether the grid appears to be under stress;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>whether fossil-based generation is unusually high;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>whether renewable generation dominates the electricity mix;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>and whether adding a dynamic load would support the system rather than increase pressure on it.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The most important concept here is the <strong>opportunity window<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>An opportunity window exists when the system has low or negative prices, strong renewable or surplus conditions, and no major stress signal. In such periods, flexible demand could potentially absorb excess electricity instead of making the system more unstable.<\/p>\n<h2>Bitcoin Mining as a Conditional Flexible Load<\/h2>\n<p>One example I discussed is <strong>Bitcoin mining as a controllable flexible load<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>This is a sensitive and often controversial topic. However, from an energy-system perspective, Bitcoin mining has one technical characteristic that makes it useful for research: it can be switched on and off quickly.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike many industrial processes, mining does not need long preparation time, complex production scheduling, or continuous physical operation. This makes it a useful case for studying conditional demand response.<\/p>\n<p>The point is not that Bitcoin mining should operate continuously. The point is the opposite.<\/p>\n<p>Bitcoin mining should only be considered under strict conditions, such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p>when electricity prices are negative or very low;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>when renewable generation is strong;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>when there is no indication of grid stress;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>when the additional load does not increase fossil-based pressure;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>and when the operation is economically and environmentally justifiable.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In this framing, mining becomes a test case for a broader energy question:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Can controllable digital loads help absorb surplus electricity during carefully selected opportunity windows?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This question is relevant not only for mining, but also for other dynamic loads such as battery charging, industrial heating, cooling systems, data-center workloads, hydrogen production, and electric-vehicle charging.<\/p>\n<h2>The Role of AI Forecasting<\/h2>\n<p>Another part of my research is the use of AI to forecast opportunity windows before they happen.<\/p>\n<p>Some flexible loads can be turned on immediately, but others need preparation. A one-hour-ahead forecast could help operators prepare for upcoming periods of low prices, renewable surplus, or safe demand-response opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>The goal is not only to predict electricity prices. A low price alone is not enough.<\/p>\n<p>A more useful AI model should help predict whether the next period is suitable for activating flexible demand based on price, load, renewable generation, surplus indicators, and grid-stress conditions.<\/p>\n<p>This creates a more realistic decision-support system. Instead of asking only, \u201cWill the price be negative?\u201d, the model asks:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Will the next hour be a safe and useful opportunity for controllable demand?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>That distinction is essential for responsible energy-system design.<\/p>\n<h2>Why This Discussion Matters for Austria<\/h2>\n<p>The DAAA Member Lounge showed that Austria\u2019s digital-asset ecosystem is becoming more mature, more regulated, and more connected to institutional decision-making.<\/p>\n<p>The official event focused on MiCAR, CASP licensing, compliance, supervision, asset-referenced tokens, and the road ahead. These topics are essential for the future of digital assets in Europe.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, the networking discussions showed that digital assets are increasingly connected to broader questions of infrastructure, sustainability, energy accountability, and real-world utility.<\/p>\n<p>For me, this is the most important direction.<\/p>\n<p>Blockchain should not be viewed only as a financial technology. It can also support secure energy data, transparent sustainability claims, automated verification, and accountable infrastructure systems.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, energy-intensive digital systems must be studied carefully. The question is not only how much energy a technology uses. The more important question is:<\/p>\n<p><strong>When does it use energy, under what grid conditions, and with what system-level effect?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A digital load that is harmful during scarcity may be useful during surplus. A process that is difficult to justify under fossil-heavy conditions may become more defensible during renewable surplus and negative-price periods.<\/p>\n<p>This is why future digital-asset research should connect regulation, energy markets, AI forecasting, cryptographic verification, and operational grid constraints.<\/p>\n<h2>Final Reflection<\/h2>\n<p>I was glad to support Walter M\u00f6senbacher and DAAA in preparing for this event, and I appreciated the opportunity to join such a high-quality professional gathering in Vienna.<\/p>\n<p>The official program provided valuable insight into MiCAR and the next stage of regulated digital assets in Europe. The networking conversations gave me the opportunity to explain how my research connects blockchain with energy verification, AI forecasting, and flexible demand.<\/p>\n<p>For me, the evening confirmed an important point: the future of digital assets will not be shaped only by regulation or technology alone. It will be shaped by the ability to connect digital systems with real institutional, economic, and sustainability challenges.<\/p>\n<p>That is exactly where I aim to contribute through my
