physical assets, processes, and events in digital form.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2302\" data-end=\"2428\">When blockchain is added, these representations can also become more <strong data-start=\"2371\" data-end=\"2427\">tamper-evident, traceable, auditable, and verifiable<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2430\" data-end=\"2543\">However, verification alone does not explain what happens when these records begin to determine outcomes such as:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"2545\" data-end=\"2688\">\n<li data-section-id=\"1n4z8ks\" data-start=\"2545\" data-end=\"2577\">renewable-energy certificates,<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"cdvlmj\" data-start=\"2578\" data-end=\"2600\">compliance statuses,<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"w9qhww\" data-start=\"2601\" data-end=\"2621\">settlement claims,<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1orxrkd\" data-start=\"2622\" data-end=\"2639\">payment rights,<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"kju1no\" data-start=\"2640\" data-end=\"2663\">ownership records, or<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"194xwfi\" data-start=\"2664\" data-end=\"2688\">carbon-related claims.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"2690\" data-end=\"2748\">This distinction became the central question of our study:<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2750\" data-end=\"2883\"><strong data-start=\"2750\" data-end=\"2883\">When does verified digital information stop merely representing a physical event and begin contributing to an institutional fact?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2885\" data-end=\"2963\">The Automated Constitution Model was developed to provide a structured answer.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"2965\" data-end=\"2968\" \/>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"6cwlzo\" data-start=\"2970\" data-end=\"3005\">The Automated Constitution Model<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"3007\" data-end=\"3057\">The ACM distinguishes seven interconnected layers:<\/p>\n<ol data-start=\"3059\" data-end=\"3329\">\n<li data-section-id=\"nzeuco\" data-start=\"3059\" data-end=\"3091\"><strong data-start=\"3062\" data-end=\"3089\">Physical infrastructure<\/strong><\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"m1v3yr\" data-start=\"3092\" data-end=\"3112\"><strong data-start=\"3095\" data-end=\"3110\">Measurement<\/strong><\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"d1nz7\" data-start=\"3113\" data-end=\"3144\"><strong data-start=\"3116\" data-end=\"3142\">Digital representation<\/strong><\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1cho8xx\" data-start=\"3145\" data-end=\"3208\"><strong data-start=\"3148\" data-end=\"3206\">Cryptographic attestation and procedural stabilization<\/strong><\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1x0hvdh\" data-start=\"3209\" data-end=\"3261\"><strong data-start=\"3212\" data-end=\"3259\">Automated rule interpretation and execution<\/strong><\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"8cx7v2\" data-start=\"3262\" data-end=\"3292\"><strong data-start=\"3265\" data-end=\"3290\">Institutional outcome<\/strong><\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"8m5k3c\" data-start=\"3293\" data-end=\"3329\"><strong data-start=\"3296\" data-end=\"3329\">Legitimacy and accountability<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p data-start=\"3331\" data-end=\"3520\">The lower layers primarily concern <strong data-start=\"3366\" data-end=\"3392\">epistemic verification<\/strong>: establishing what happened, representing it digitally, and providing evidence that the record has not been improperly altered.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3522\" data-end=\"3702\">The transition occurs when verified records are interpreted through encoded rules, smart contracts, certification procedures, compliance frameworks, or other governance mechanisms.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3704\" data-end=\"3854\">At this point, the system can begin producing outcomes that organizations, regulators, markets, and other institutional actors recognize and act upon.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3856\" data-end=\"4047\">The digital twin therefore becomes more than an information system. Under specific technical and institutional conditions, it can participate in the <strong data-start=\"4005\" data-end=\"4046\">constitution of institutional reality<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"4049\" data-end=\"4052\" \/>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"16qiupx\" data-start=\"4054\" data-end=\"4079\">How the Idea Developed<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"4081\" data-end=\"4143\">The conceptual direction of this research developed gradually.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4145\" data-end=\"4463\">In March 2026, I presented <strong data-start=\"4172\" data-end=\"4280\">\u201cFrom Epistemology to Ontology: Blockchain Digital Twins and the Institutional Authority of Energy Data\u201d<\/strong> at the workshop <em data-start=\"4297\" data-end=\"4362\">Tokenization and Digital Twins: Negotiating Reality and Fiction<\/em>, organized by the Zug Institute for Blockchain Research at the University of Lucerne in Switzerland.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4465\" data-end=\"4609\"><a class=\"decorated-link\" href=\"https:\/\/javadfarahani.com\/speech-workshops\/presenting-blockchain-digital-twins-energy-data-zibr\/?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\" data-start=\"4465\" data-end=\"4609\">Read about the presentation in Switzerland \u2192<\/a><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4611\" data-end=\"4739\">That presentation examined an emerging question concerning the <strong data-start=\"4674\" data-end=\"4738\">institutional authority of digitally verified energy records<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4741\" data-end=\"4930\">The presentation, subsequent discussions, and further conceptual development helped refine the distinction between two fundamentally different functions of blockchain-secured digital twins:<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4932\" data-end=\"5066\"><strong data-start=\"4932\" data-end=\"4971\">verifying information about reality<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"4976\" data-end=\"5065\">participating in the institutional constitution of outcomes based on that information<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5068\" data-end=\"5158\">The Automated Constitution Model emerged from the gradual development of this distinction.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"5160\" data-end=\"5163\" \/>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"5729qg\" data-start=\"5165\" data-end=\"5194\">Why Accountability Matters<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"5196\" data-end=\"5321\">The transition from verification to institutional action also changes the accountability structure of digital infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5323\" data-end=\"5395\">Consider a renewable-energy certificate that is generated automatically.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5397\" data-end=\"5477\">The final institutional outcome may depend on several interconnected components:<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5479\" data-end=\"5610\"><strong data-start=\"5479\" data-end=\"5610\">physical event \u2192 sensor \u2192 data representation \u2192 blockchain attestation \u2192 encoded rule \u2192 certificate \u2192 institutional recognition<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5612\" data-end=\"5704\">An error at any earlier stage may propagate through the system and affect the final outcome.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5706\" data-end=\"5782\">Accountability therefore cannot necessarily be attributed to a single actor.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5784\" data-end=\"5850\">Depending on the system, responsibility may be distributed across:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"5852\" data-end=\"6066\">\n<li data-section-id=\"16bymk0\" data-start=\"5852\" data-end=\"5879\">infrastructure operators,<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"13k4vp4\" data-start=\"5880\" data-end=\"5907\">sensor and IoT operators,<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"v68ops\" data-start=\"5908\" data-end=\"5931\">data-model designers,<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1dk0u9s\" data-start=\"5932\" data-end=\"5951\">oracle providers,<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"16onnda\" data-start=\"5952\" data-end=\"5974\">software developers,<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"6e1410\" data-start=\"5975\" data-end=\"6000\">smart-contract authors,<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1hc2ee\" data-start=\"6001\" data-end=\"6014\">certifiers,<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"du95uw\" data-start=\"6015\" data-end=\"6036\">platform operators,<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"d7sxak\" data-start=\"6037\" data-end=\"6052\">auditors, and<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"191ieb8\" data-start=\"6053\" data-end=\"6066\">regulators.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"6068\" data-end=\"6165\">This is why the seventh layer of the ACM focuses explicitly on <strong data-start=\"6131\" data-end=\"6164\">legitimacy and accountability<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6167\" data-end=\"6277\">The important question is not only whether an automated outcome was technically generated correctly, but also:<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6279\" data-end=\"6388\"><strong data-start=\"6279\" data-end=\"6388\">Who has the authority to recognize it, contest it, reverse it, or accept responsibility when it is wrong?<\/strong><\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"6390\" data-end=\"6393\" \/>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"12xgg6q\" data-start=\"6395\" data-end=\"6428\">Connecting My Earlier Research<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"6430\" data-end=\"6544\">This study also represents a progression in my research on blockchain, energy systems, and digital infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6546\" data-end=\"6769\">My earlier work examined how blockchain can support <strong data-start=\"6598\" data-end=\"6646\">verifiable and tamper-evident energy records<\/strong>, including the development and empirical assessment of a blockchain-secured solar-energy logger for edge-IoT environments.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6771\" data-end=\"6963\"><a class=\"decorated-link\" href=\"https:\/\/javadfarahani.com\/academic\/a-sustainability-assessment-of-a-blockchain-secured-solar-energy-logger-for-edge-iot-environments\/?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\" data-start=\"6771\" data-end=\"6963\">Read the blockchain-secured solar-energy logger study \u2192<\/a><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6965\" data-end=\"7015\">The new paper moves one level beyond verification.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"7017\" data-end=\"7040\">Instead of asking only:<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"7042\" data-end=\"7077\"><strong data-start=\"7042\" data-end=\"7077\">Can we trust the energy record?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"7079\" data-end=\"7087\">it asks:<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"7089\" data-end=\"7191\"><strong data-start=\"7089\" data-end=\"7191\">What happens when institutions begin using that trusted record to generate consequential outcomes?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"7193\" data-end=\"7325\">This shift\u2014from information integrity to institutional constitution\u2014is the central contribution of the Automated Constitution Model.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"7327\" data-end=\"7330\" \/>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"q5fops\" data-start=\"7332\" data-end=\"7356\">Research Implications<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"7358\" data-end=\"7488\">The framework has potential applications wherever verified digital records interact with automated institutional rules, including:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"7490\" data-end=\"7789\">\n<li data-section-id=\"xqirgy\" data-start=\"7490\" data-end=\"7523\">renewable-energy certification,<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1e09odj\" data-start=\"7524\" data-end=\"7556\">electricity-market settlement,<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"4z89rr\" data-start=\"7557\" data-end=\"7591\">automated regulatory compliance,<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1pexsl2\" data-start=\"7592\" data-end=\"7612\">carbon accounting,<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"4oz7jd\" data-start=\"7613\" data-end=\"7647\">blockchain-based energy markets,<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"19t1md4\" data-start=\"7648\" data-end=\"7666\">smart buildings,<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1n8j55v\" data-start=\"7667\" data-end=\"7696\">distributed energy systems,<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"5426pn\" data-start=\"7697\" data-end=\"7737\">digital product and asset records, and<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"h78t0g\" data-start=\"7738\" data-end=\"7789\">other forms of digitally governed infrastructure.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"7791\" data-end=\"7863\">The framework also creates several opportunities for empirical research.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"7865\" data-end=\"8145\">A particularly important next step is to examine <strong data-start=\"7914\" data-end=\"7953\">where the seven-layer process fails<\/strong>, whether failures propagate across layers, and how institutional actors assign responsibility when automated outcomes are based on incorrect, incomplete, or contested digital representations.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"8147\" data-end=\"8150\" \/>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"qzkf0i\" data-start=\"8152\"
